Work Area
ERA focuses on several key areas
Although ERA has established a presence in nearly all districts of Uttarakhand, either directly or through partner NGOs, its intensive work was concentrated in Pulhindola, located in the Champawat district.
Recently, ERA has expanded its focus to include Tiuni tehsil in the Dehradun district, a more challenging area that presents new opportunities for engagement.
According to the 2011 census, Tiuni tehsil covers an area of 503 km² and is home to 33,926 people across 4,715 households in 82 villages. The population density is 67 individuals per square kilometer, with a reported decadal growth rate of 12.41% (2001 to 2011). The literacy rate in the region stands at 54.32%, with 62.60% of males and 45.28% of females being literate.
Of the total land area, only 28% is cultivable, and among that, just 21% is irrigated. Cultivators make up 70% of the population, totaling approximately 10,309 individuals. The region's altitudes range from 1,000 meters to 8,000 meters, contributing to its rich biodiversity, diverse flora and fauna, and the presence of the indigenous Jaunsari community, known for its unique traditions, dialects, and lifestyles.
This area is commonly referred to as the Jaunsar-Bawar region and is classified as a Tri bal Area.
Currently, the region produces high-quality apples, walnuts, rajma, brown rice, and off-season vegetables. However, it lacks essential interventions in promotion, primary processing, transportation, branding, and marketing to enhance these agricultural products.
ERA has maintained a strong presence in the proposed area for over 30 years, during which it has implemented a multitude of projects. The organization has its registered office at Tiuni, and one of its board members hails from the beneficiary community, ensuring a deep understanding of local needs and challenges.
Given the opportunity, ERA's intervention in Tiuni tehsil has the potential to evolve into a meaningful and long-lasting relationship, fostering sustainable development and empowerment within the community.
