Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Uttarakhand, Dhamich village is a place where aspirations often struggle to take flight. Yet, within this seemingly ordinary setting, the remarkable story of Karam Singh emerges as a powerful testament to resilience, determination, and the transformative impact of community engagement. Karam's journey from a disadvantaged rural youth to a successful entrepreneur and community leader exemplifies how empowering local youth can uplift entire communities—a mission passionately championed by the Experiments in Rural Advancement (ERA)..

Early Life and Overcoming Adversity

Karam Singh was born into a family facing the harsh realities of poverty, being the eldest of four siblings. His educational journey began at the village school in Loich, where he completed his primary education. He then moved on to the Government Ashram Padyati School in Tiuni for middle school and later attended Government Inter College, Tiuni, for his higher secondary education. Despite the financial hardships that loomed over his family, Karam was resolute in his pursuit of education and his desire to contribute positively to his community.

From 1992 to 1994, Karam served as a National Social Volunteer with Nehru Yuva Kendra in Dehradun, earning a modest honorarium of Rs. 750 per month. This meager income had to cover all his living expenses, forcing him to master the art of frugality and resourcefulness. During this challenging period, he also completed his post-graduation while actively engaging with two organizations focused on community development.

A Pivotal Moment: Joining ERA

Since its inception in 1993-94, HRJKS has embraced a participatory model of community-based development to identify local issues and work toward sustainable solutions. The organization focuses on education, health, employment, and agriculture while raising awareness about broader socio-economic issues. Although HRJKS prioritizes the concerns of children, its approach is holistic, aiming to improve the status of women and children across various dimensions.

Initially supported by ERA as a nodal agency for the CRY Trust, HRJKS now operates in villages within the Karnprayag Block of Chamoli district. Under the Child Rights program, the organization has enhanced health and education in the region primarily through the establishment and revitalization of women's self-help groups, Village Health Committees, and Village Education Committees. These institutions serve as the foundation for the community's assertion of rights and act as focal points for demands made to the government.

Entrepreneurial Spirit: From Struggles to Success

With no financial support from his family and a burning desire to create a sustainable livelihood, Karam ventured into entrepreneurship. He began with small subcontracting work in road construction, a challenging endeavor that tested his resolve. Despite the obstacles, Karam persevered, driven by the vision of a brighter future for himself and his community. His wife, Rita, played an instrumental role during this period, providing unwavering support and encouragement as they navigated the hardships together.

Recognizing the untapped tourism potential of the Tons Valley, Karam shifted his focus to developing a resort in his village. Through sheer determination and hard work, he constructed ten wooden huts, transforming his vision into reality. The resort, named …………………….., began to attract visitors, generating income and creating job opportunities for local residents. Karam's entrepreneurial journey not only improved his family's financial situation but also contributed significantly to the economic development of his community.

Their work has garnered recognition from various government departments. Chandrakala Nautiyal received the prestigious *Teelu Rauteli Award* from the Chief Minister for her contributions to women’s empowerment and child development. Additionally, she was honored with the *Women Empowerment Award* by the Feel-Good Women’s Wellness Foundation and received a Scooty as part of the *Nari Shakti Samman* from the Care & Cure organization. Girish Nautiyal was also recognized with the *Gaura Devi Samman* for his courageous leadership for the year 2023-24.

A Legacy of Empowerment

Karam Singh's story is not solely about personal success; it is a narrative of empowerment and community upliftment. Married at the age of 29 to Rita, Karam and Rita are proud parents of two children. Their daughter is currently studying in Dehradun, while their son, inspired by his father's journey, has taken the initiative to promote tourism in the area. Karam actively supports his son's efforts by developing the necessary infrastructure to facilitate growth and attract more visitors to the region.

Karam attributes much of his success to the steadfast support of his wife, Rita, who stood by him through thick and thin. Together, they have become role models in their community, demonstrating the power of resilience, hard work, and collaboration. Their story serves as a beacon of hope for other young people in the region, illustrating that with determination and the right support, it is possible to transform challenges into opportunities.
